The Psychological Trades of Leadership

Being a leader is not for the faint of heart. It takes courage, strength, and conviction to stand up for what you believe in and to fight for what's right--even when everyone else is against you. But being a leader also comes with its fair share of challenges, both internal and external. From constantly having to be "on" to dealing with difficult people, there's a lot that leaders have to contend with on a daily basis. Here, we'll take a look at some of the more common psychological trades of leadership and how you can overcome them.

1. The need to be "on" all the time.

As a leader, you are always on display. People are constantly watching and judging your every move, which can be exhausting. It's important to remember that you don't have to be perfect; in fact, people will respect you more if you're authentic and honest about your mistakes. The key is to learn from them and move on.

2. Dealing with difficult people.

One of the most challenging aspects of leadership is dealing with difficult people. Whether it's an angry customer or a disgruntled employee, you have to know how to handle the situation in a way that doesn't make things worse. The key is to stay calm and respectful while still maintaining your authority.

3. Making tough decisions.

Leaders are often put in the position of having to make tough decisions that not everyone will agree with. This can be difficult, but it's important to remember that you're not always going to make everyone happy--and that's okay. What's most important is that you make the best decision for the company or group as a whole.

4. Shouldering the blame.

When things go wrong, it's often the leader who gets blamed--even if it wasn't their fault. This can be frustrating, but it's something that you have to learn to deal with if you want to be successful in a leadership role. The key is to take responsibility for your actions and learn from your mistakes so that you don't make them again in the future."
